O meu Vizinho

This month reminds me of a special person, to whom I owe a lot, so I will just leave a note about what this “grandpa” meant to me.
My neighbour, who was much more than this, dedicated his life to his land and goats, as much as he would to the children he never had, and he took every chance to learn and teach. His look at the camera lens was always one of naivety and curiosity, typical of when he wished to learn something else. It was with him that I spent the best Christmas Eve ever: while at home all the preparations were made, I learned to grow peas… We spent hours and hours laughing, because I always ended up not managing to throw the manure as I should, and he repeated “aaah, Rita, you little devil!”.
I will forever miss the tinkle of the goat bell, running through the hills with my brother, looking for Flor and his flock, and listening to his stories for endless hours. I am grateful because once I had a third grandpa!

Budapest

For the first time since I left Lisbon, I felt home in many ways. Quite dirty streets, the huge gap between the poor and the rich, the slight insecurity you can feel, and specially the nice food –it all made me feel home again. I spent these three days feeling the huge discrepancy between the memories of Lisbon and wishing to come back to my new home. How difficult it is to confront yourself with an already quite distant reality...

I encourage all of those who can to taste Gulyás or Goulash, and also to relax in one of their wonderful SPAs.

Now it's time for a break in the blog, in order to come back to an issue that also concerns me. As a student, I am against the policies of the Minister of Education. Today in Portugal, teachers came out to the streets and, since I'm not there to express myself the same way, here's my way of expressing my support for students, teachers and schools against Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues' bad job. Here are some photos of the huge demonstration of 8th March 2008.

Vienna

A weekend is not enough to get to know the magnificent Vienna (Wien, in German). I will not post pictures of all the places I’ve been, but I’ll show what this beautiful city showed me.

Parlament
Parliament

Stephansdom
St. Stephen's Cathedral

Rathaus
City Hall

Volksgarten; Hofburg
Volksgarten; Imperial Palace

I found myself taking pictures at buildings, thinking they were monuments – that’s how well put together they were, and with such an amazing architecture!

O Design anda por toda a parte!! :)
Design is everywhere!! :)

Agradáveis locais de dia e acolhedores à noite.
Pleasant places during the day, and cosy places by night.

Lobkowitzplatz.
Horses, bikes, cars, people, and animals – every one has their own space to walk the city. Lobkowitzplatz.

Mariahilfer Kirche.
The most unpleasant thing was surely the poverty that has been hitting the city, specially of people from Eastern Europe. Not only does it shock us to see people begging (specially in churches), but also it shows us an ugly, unpleasant face of Vienna. Mariahilfer Church.

The place where, without understanding the language, you get the message…

...onde as casas são convidativas...
… where houses are inviting homes…

...onde os cemitérios se tornam jardins...
…where graveyards become gardens…

… where mysticism is everywhere...

...onde a minha calçada portuguesa passou a lenha...
… where my Portuguese sidewalk is now firewood…

...onde a paisagem se tornou pintura...
… where the landscape is turned into painting…

e onde ainda há muito a explorar...
and where there is still much to explore…
